Today I would like to share what I call a proverb thru the eyes of grace (i.e. “the new covenant”). I realize that there is also a physical interpretation. Proverbs 20:13 declares: “Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty: Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread” (NKJ).
God is not against a good night’s sleep as other scriptures teach (see Ps.127:2; Proverbs 3:24). What this speaks to me as believer is; to not be asleep spiritually; and wake up to my righteousness in Christ (see 1 Cor.15:34). If I do not wake up to my right standing in Him I will come to poverty by not receiving all the riches that are in Christ (see the elder brother in Luke 15:25-32).
The key is to open my spiritual eyes and see Jesus and all that He has done. You do this as you see Jesus in the Word (see John 6:40: Luke 24:25-27; 44-47). When your eyes are open to Jesus and His finished work you will be satisfied with the Bread of Life (i.e. Him) (see John 6:35,41,51). When a person truly partakes of Him they will be satisfied and never hunger for the things of this world. As the old hymn says; “and the things of this world will grow strangely dim; in the light of His glory and grace.” True Christianity is not about giving up anything; but realizing all that one possesses in Christ (you guessed it: Wow!)
