“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8 NKJV) I used to believe that worldliness had to do with what TV shows I watched, how I behaved, etc. I have since come to realize that being worldly is made up in how I relate to God as His child. Do I go before Him based on what Jesus has done, or do I relate to Him according to my personal merit as the people of the world operate in their relationships? If my relationship with the Father is based on my earning His pleasure, I am being worldly. To be a friend of the world is commit adultery against our Lord. To be a friend of the world is to relish relating to the Father based on performance rather than the redemptive work of His Son (see James 4:4). It has been accurately said that all the works of the flesh that occur in a believer’s life, flow from a mistaken identity. Whenever a child of God attempts to try to be what they already are in Him; failure is inevitable. Let us relax in who He has made us and avoid the trap of worldliness. You are precious.
